John is an astute litigation lawyer practicing primarily in all aspects of family law. Although resolving family law disputes is one of John’s core practice areas, he also has experience in real estate transactions, civil litigation, personal injury, and wills and estates. John strives to bring excellence, quality, and timely legal advice to everyone of his clients. His “client first” approach to legal services has garnered the trust and praise from his previous clients. He brings a diverse array of practice experience to McLean Legal and prior to joining the firm, he obtained valuable experience working for a boutique family law firm and a full-service litigation firm. During law school, John added to his breadth of experience by working in one of the legal departments for a global energy supermajor in Royal Dutch Shell (Shell Canada Limited).

John has made countless appearances before the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta and the Provincial Court of Alberta; however, and if possible, John strives to promote out-of-court lawyer-assisted settlements through mediations and arbitrations. John was a founding executive of the Diversity and Law Society at the University of Calgary a recipient of the Lexpert Zenith Award for the Promotion of Diversity and Inclusion in the Legal Profession. He is passionate about promoting fundamental human rights and reducing prejudice, particularly in the workplace. John is a member of the Canadian Bar Association, Calgary Bar Association, and the Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers.

John was admitted to the Alberta Bar in 2018 and joined McLean Legal as an associate lawyer in 2020. 

In early 2018, John voluntarily joined the Royal Canadian Navy as an Intelligence Officer and is based out of Calgary’s reserve unit or stone-frigate HMCS Tecumseh. Although he is proud of his professional accomplishments, he is most thankful for his experience and training with the Navy. Outside of the office, you can find him spending his time perfecting his culinary skills, playing basketball or hiking in the Canadian Rockies.
